History

Long before Inland Marine Service, Inc. got its humble start, our founder, David Hammond, Sr. lived a “Tom Sawyer” life. From the young age of 12, David Sr. worked and lived on the water. By age 19, he had proudly worked as pilot of a harbor tug on the Ohio River and Captain on line haul towing vessels on the Mississippi River System.

When the opportunity arose, in 1988, for him to operate a line haul towboat under a vessel management contract, he jumped at the chance. David Sr. was eager to operate a unique vessel management business–one that firmly valued his fellow mariners. With years of experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to work on the river, David Sr. created the foundation of IMS. With his wife Cathy by his side, they worked diligently for years to make a name for their company–a name that is synonymous with integrity, honesty, and true pride in the daily work accomplished.

Today, Cathy Hammond, Holly Hammond, and Dave Hammond, Jr. carry on these same qualities by offering service that is second to none and a great working environment. Providing our professional mariners with a shore-side leadership team experienced in working on vessels, has long been a key philosophy at IMS. They know well what it is like to work on the river and strive to make our mariners’ environments as comfortable as possible.

Safety is a core concept at IMS and the basis upon which we operate.
