The Importance of Training Drills
Thursday, April 27, 2023
Training on a vessel isn't just to meet the new Industry rules. Training our crewmembers is self-preservation.
If you are hurt, in a fire, in the water, on a chemical tow that is venting hard on a vessel and the person in the wheelhouse goes down or many other situations. You want a crew that is well trained in the procedures that are needed to deal with the situation at hand.
Setting a sheet of paper out for everyone to sign isn't training, sure it's a paper trail to meet an audit, but that Signature will not pull you out of the water, or assist you in fighting a fire, or know the proper first-aid if you are hurt.
Training is going through the motions of an actual situation.
Training is repeating that scenario over and over thoughout the year, so your response is natural not done in panic mode.
Training is everyone being involved and talking about it, letting the crew ask questions and answering the questions in a manner that they understand.
Training is leading by example, not handing drill, response, etc to someone under you.
Everyone's life and safety depend on our Training. This Company, our crewmembers, our crewmember's family and our customers depend and rely on our Training.
