Are you a fortune teller?

Are you a fortune teller?

Can you foretell the future events, that point in time when equipment might break, or nature will pop up and become a hazard?

One of IMS's safety rules is "work vests must be warn on lower deck." This rule is so important that there is a warning sign on any access to lower deck.

To explain the reason for this rule here it is:
• Vessel grounding and face up rigging parting, knocking you in the water
• A slick spot on the deck from spilled oil or fuel, ice, rain on a deck with no nonskid.
• Drift popping up front stern barge clearing the deck
• Face wires loosening up than coming tight when steered on.

Any one of these scenarios can get you killed.

Excuses I've heard:
”I just stepped out to use my phone"
“I was no farther than the capstan for some privacy..."
“I was only outside for a few minutes...“
”Captain can’t see us, we do it all the time and nothing happens..."
"Our Engineers checking something..."
"Wticking fuel..."
"Walking from engine room to doghouse..."
etc.

Mates, leadmen and Engineers are our role models. When you are seen putting on your vest, everyone will follow suit. A gentle reminder if you see a crew member not donning their vest. If it continues, take it upstairs.

If we follow the safety rule, the likelihood of not going home is taken away.
